The History of Hearing Aids.

Hearing aids have a very unique history. When people think of hearing aids, they often think of the devices of today. Today, hearing aids are small and easy to conceal. That was not always the case. They have come a long way through the years.

The first hearing aid was the simple ear trumpet. While it has likely been a part of history since the beginning of time, its first recorded use was in the 1700s. This hearing aid was large, looked like a trumpet, and had to be held up to the ear.

Hearing aid history, hearing loss informationNext was the Clarvox Lorgnette Trumpet in the early 1800s. The trumpet came with a pair of glasses attached. While this hearing aid was still rather large, it was meant to be less conspicuous than the previous trumpet.

The 1850s brought about the London Dome. This was smaller than the trumpet, and also more detailed. It came in different sizes. Someone who had very bad hearing would get a larger dome than someone who only had mild hearing loss.

In 1887, the ear tube came along. This hearing device was quite different than any other hearing aid. The person with hearing loss put one end in their ear, and the speaker spoke in the other end.

In the 1930s, hearing aids began to change quite a bit. The desktop hearing aid was electric, but very difficult. It was quite large, looked somewhat like a radio, and had to sit on a desk.

Carbon microphone aids were used in a widespread fashion in the 1940s. They consisted of a hearing aid and a microphone. They could be quite large and bulky, but they were still relatively popular.

In 1953, the Oticon Pocket Model debuted. It fit easily into a pocket and aided hearing in a less noticeable way.

When over the ear hearing aids came into the mainstream in the 1950s and 1960s, the face of hearing aids would never be the same. By the 1970s, hearing aids were manufactured to go right into the ear canal, and by the 1990s, there were digital processing hearing aids.

Hearing aids have grown over the years, and they will continue to do so. At one time, they were cumbersome devises, but now, they are incredibly small and most people do not even notice when someone is wearing one.
